The Entrepreneur Who Couldn't
In 2023, I decided to start my own business, but the financial return was...well, zero. And probably will not make any more this year either. (Worst business ever?)
Starting a business is not easy, especially when you're trying to prove you're qualified for it. I worked many hours for free to build my company. Dealing with immigration issues and paperwork is a common but unique challenge. It's a journey that teaches invaluable life lessons.
It will take at least another six months to have an officially registered company. I see this time as learning at my own company, getting direct experience and preparing for future success.
Right now, it doesn't quite feel like a legitimate business, and many have accused me of running a scam—questioning why I would work for free. But what were my options?
In recent years, I've gained various skills. These include UX/UI and web design, social media and email marketing, game design, branding, and storytelling. I also have experience in 3D design, modelling, architecture and interior design, rendering, illustration, and CAD. (list goes on but I will stop here.)
Despite having enough skills for three different jobs, I found myself using them for seemingly no purpose. So, choosing to work for free was at least a way to maintain my sanity.
During this time, I found comfort in using my skills to help others. It turned my challenges into opportunities to support others. This is often where we find our purpose. Just like any journey, there are many obstacles to overcome. It feels like going on a trip without knowing the destination.
Anyhow, here's to a successful year ahead! Even though I didn't earn any money last year and might not this year, I'm still hopeful and determined.
Here's to resilience and optimism for a successful year ahead!
